The Premises, Kensington: Delightfully delish

I’d been to the Premises in Kensington once before, but only for coffee. Having heard excellent feedback from others about this local joint (a mere 5 minute walk from my house!), I was keen to come back – so when EK suggested going for lunch after our Saturday morning shift, it was the perfect opportunity for us to sample the food. Great timing too – I’d been hankering for a decent brunch (especially eggs!) for quite a few weeks now.
Like any decent cafe on a Saturday arvo, it was bustling with people. We were told it was a 20 minute wait – luckily a table cleared up, and we were seated after about 10 minutes.
Their house blend is from Seven Seeds, and the time I had it previously it was good – however for some odd reason, although my cappuccino arrived looking awesome, the milk tasted a bit strange – there was a peculiar smell that I couldn’t quite place (EK said she thought it was her froth that tasted weird). I was a bit disappointed by this.

We both felt like savoury breakfast dishes, but were torn because the French toast looked really good too. So, there was only one sensible solution...(order both):
‘Baghdad Eggs’ two poached eggs, spiced butter, hummus & fresh mint
My Baghdad eggs were good; the toast was thick, soft on the inside and wonderfully crisp on the crust – perhaps it was drenched in a tad too much butter and oil. It came with a bean or nut of some sort, that I couldn’t place (perhaps hazelnut?) – it was delicious.
Herbed Ricotta on organic toast with lemon zest, confit cherry tomatoes & two poached eggs
EK’s herbed ricotta on eggs was fresh and tasty, a simple dish beautifully presented, refreshing and palatable.
French Toasted Brioche with rhubarb & orange compote, cinnamon ricotta & almond brittle
Of course we had to share the French toast for dessert – this was a good decision, as it was as rich as it looks! It was scrumptious, although I had difficulty finishing my half as I was stuffed by this stage. The cinnamon ricotta was a great feature, and the taste reminded us of a cinnamon donut. Only one word to describe this dish – YUM-MY.
We were both beyond full by the end, so we went for a long walk to enjoy the sunshine (and hopefully help speed up the digestion process).
This was a great place to go for brunch – I will definitely be coming back very soon!
